Over the past eight years Lissom has been managing municipal and industrial
sludge as a benefit to agricultural production, through use of the sludge as a fertilizer
and soil conditioning supplement.
This management procedure has involved:
- establishing volumes and chemical characteristics of the sludge to be used.
- determining selection parameters for spreading sites.
- evaluation of suitable spreading sites.
- working with farmer to develop crop production program to maximize nutrient and soil
conditioning benefits. This includes type of crop, timing, rotation to be used.
- working with local agricultural specialists to evaluate compaction and run-off risks.
- monitoring of soil and groundwater to ensure adequate protection and long term
protection of the soil and groundwater resource.
